Turbosmart’s founder took his love of fast cars and turned it into a multimillion-dollar manufacturing business with customers around the world.
Sydney-based Turbosmart manufactures a wide range of parts and accessories for turbocharged vehicles, including blow-off valves, boost controllers, internal and external wastegates, and fuel pressure regulators. These accessories assist turbochargers to compress the air flowing into an engine, which gives vehicles more speed and power. Turbosmart’s products are used in the automotive, marine and aircraft sectors.
Founded in 1997 with just two products, Turbosmart now exports to 50 countries. In 2007, the company opened a subsidiary in California, USA to service the North American market. Seven years later, it established a second subsidiary in Birmingham to serve customers in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.
In 2014, Turbosmart signed new distributors in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America, and designed and engineered several new products. Export sales grew by 108 per cent in 2013–14.
To increase its exposure and aid international expansion, Turbosmart attends major motorsports events and sponsors key race teams and drivers, including Daigo Saito, Daijiro Yoshihara and Darren McNamara, who compete in the USA’s famed Formula Drift event.
According to the judges, Turbosmart demonstrated that Australian ingenuity in the auto sector is alive and thriving, and that it has created a name for itself through clever marketing and a strategic approach. They said the company’s excellent marketing structure was perfectly aligned to its product and customer base.
