In 2014, Charles Darwin University (CDU) celebrated its 11th year of providing high-quality education, training and research in the Northern Territory.

With more than 1,500 international students from over 50 countries, CDU is the territory’s leading education services provider. Its on-campus student population is one of the most diverse in Australia.

CDU offers internationally recognised bachelor, Masters and PhD programs and vocational education and training courses. These programs and courses can be accessed online and through multiple study locations across Australia. CDU is known internationally for its research in areas such as the environment, engineering, health, Indigenous knowledge, renewable energy, and social and economic policy.

CDU’s successful expansion into Sydney and Melbourne enabled the university to grow international enrolments by 20 per cent in 2013–14, a growth the judges noted is above the industry standard and particularly impressive given the institution’s location in relation to its competitors.

During the year, CDU also grew its market share in India and Nepal, expanded to Sri Lanka and Vietnam, and signed an education and training contract with the Timor Leste Ministry of Finance.

The judges commented that CDU demonstrated commitment to growing its international business in a strategic and sustainable way. They also said CDU’s strategy differed from others in the sector by taking an innovative and longer-term approach to market development.
