Established in 2005, Blast Movement Technologies (BMT) is a global leader in blast movement monitoring technology.
The company was founded by a University of Queensland researcher who, along with three colleagues, invented a system to measure rock movements during the blasting process.
The Blast Movement Monitoring (BMM) system comprises transponders, a specialised portable detector and proprietary software. The transponders are placed in the rock prior to blasting and located after the blast using the detector. The software calculates the movement vectors to determine the ore’s location after the blast.
The patented BMM system is used by mining companies worldwide to accurately locate ore and waste zones after blasting, ensuring they don’t accidentally discard valuable ore that could be worth millions of dollars in profits.
An export-focused organisation since its establishment, BMT has achieved 50 per cent sales growth year-on-year. Despite the global downturn in the mining industry, the company increased revenue by 42 per cent and grew the number of new customers by 15 per cent in 2013–14. Exports contributed 69 per cent of BMT’s revenue during the year.
The judges said BMT is an outstanding success story of a very effective solution to a problem faced by the mining industry. They added that the initiative displayed by BMT is exactly what Australia needs – the intelligence to develop a new technology and the confidence to establish a company and take it to the world.
