mHITs began in 2004 as Australia’s first and only mobile money service, allowing payments to be sent and received via SMS text message. The company now specialises in providing low-cost, international mobile money transfers for the ‘unbanked’ – people who do not have access to a bank account, primarily in emerging markets. The service allows payments to be transferred across international borders via SMS without the need for the recipient to require a transfer agent or bank. mHITs increased exports by nearly 200 per cent in 2014–15, and in the next 12 months, aims to expand its service to 15 new corridors in Africa.
