RightShip – owned equally by BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto Shipping, and Cargill Ocean Transport – is a ship vetting company which helps exporters get their products safely from one part of the world to another.
The company was set up in 2001 to address a key problem recognised across the shipping industry: a lack of accessible transparent data to enable shippers and charterers around the world to identify and avoid substandard vessels.
Ship vetting both identifies and analyses a ship, enabling RightShip’s customers to remove substandard vessels from their supply chain. This minimises the risk of marine incidents, loss of lives, loss of cargo, and environmental damage.
RightShip’s Ship Vetting Information System is accessible online and contains data on more than 120,000 maritime companies. The systems uses a sophisticated algorithm to analyse over fifty risk factors have that a proven link to incidents and casualties.
The company currently evaluates more than 70,000 vessels, and last year removed 1,158 from their customer supply chains.
Today, RightShip has customers in 40 countries, undertakes ship inspections in 114 countries, and generates some 84 per cent of its revenue outside Australia.
The Australian Export Award judges were very impressed with RightShip’s work. For exporting to be successful, they said, the transit of goods has to take place without losses of product, labour, ships, or damage to the environment and RightShip makes a ‘real’ contribution in this regard.
‘They are maritime solution providers around the world. They are supply chain solution providers. And they are risk managers that customers are willing to pay for,’ the judges said.
