Xstrata Coal NSW produces thermal and coking coal. One of the world's largest exporters of seaborne thermal coal, it has an interest in the operations of thirty coal mines in New South Wales and Queensland in Australia, and in Colombia and South Africa.
Xstrata Coal produces over 100 million tonnes of coal annually and employs more than 17,000 people across the globe. The company has grown its export production by 28 per cent from 2007 to 2011 and has committed to substantially developing new export production capacity during the last three years.
Leading practice systems have been put in place to monitor performance and manage day-to-day operations, with operations integrated under the one business platform covering finance, production, supply, maintenance and human resources.
Xstrata Coal also has a dedicated logistics team to manage its product from pit to port, and has implemented an integrated coal flow management system to facilitate on-time, on-specification deliveries.
The company achieved 22 per cent growth in export revenue in 2011-12 and continues to invest in operational expansion and market diversification.
The Australian Export Award judges commended Xstrata Coal for a consistent and effective export marketing strategy, observing that the main factors backing the company’s success were superior performance in terms of product quality, reliability and delivery.
The judges also mentioned Xstrata Coal’s leadership in contributing and participating in projects related to technological solutions around carbon abatement such as carbon capture and storage and coal-bed methane drainage and usage.
The judges said that the constant growth and expanding export performance of the company, combined with its corporate and social responsibility, makes Xstrata Coal a ‘stand-out’ in the industry.
