ResMed named 2006 DHL Australian Exporter of the Year
The company is a global leader in sleep medicine; developing, manufacturing and marketing products that diagnose, treat and manage sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and other related respiratory conditions. By focusing on upgrading the design and function of its innovative technologies, which it has exported since 1989, ResMed has become internationally successful in one of the fastest-growing segments of the respiratory industry with a presence in over 65 countries.
ResMed was founded in Sydney in 1989 by Dr Peter Farrell, who recognized the potential of the sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) market. Eighteen years later, with a passionate Dr Farrell still at the helm, ResMed draws its biggest sense of achievement and satisfaction from helping to improve the lives of people with SDB and other respiratory disorders.
Since commercialising its devices for treating obstructive sleep apnea - a major type of SDB where sufferers stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, the NSW company has been largely responsible for increasing the awareness of the disorder which affects up to 20 per cent of the adult population and is a debilitating medical condition resulting in chronic poor quality sleep and severe sleep deprivation. It is associated with other serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and depression.
While SDB is as widespread as diabetes or asthma, it is diagnosed and treated much less often. Having dramatically grown its operations through introducing a number of innovative products, REsMed is well-positioned to meet the challenges of this under-penetrated market. Sales of the company's recently released mask and flow generator system - the most profitibale product yet, are now running at $800 million per year.
2005, REesMed made BusinessWeek magazine's list of 100 Hot Growth Companies for the sixth time in seven years. It was also named Manufacturer of the Year for 2006 by the UK Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP).
In 2006, ResMed won the Large Advanced Manufacturer Award and the Australian Exporter of the Year at the 2006 Australian Export Awards.
On receiving the award, ResMed's Senior Vice President (Asia Pacific), Paul Eisen, acknowledged the hard work of the ResMed team globally, which has grown to over 2,000 employees, 1,200 based in Sydney, and a presence in 67 countries. In fiscal year 2006, ResMed achieved revenues of US$607 million, maintaining a position as a Top 100 Australian Company, dually listed on the ASX and NYSE, an outstanding example of how innovation, dedication and sound business strategies were helping Australian enterprises build global markets for their products.
